總統任內第11次出訪的「久揚之旅」，去程過境美國東岸波士頓，並在母校哈佛大學與國際學者座談。
對於國民黨準總統參選人洪秀柱的兩岸政策曾引起一些爭議，隨行媒體詢問，總統是否將在過境美國時替洪秀柱做些解釋？總統則表示，美方對國民黨的政策都很瞭解，他不需做太多說明。總統：『(原音)其實美方對我們國民黨的政策都很了解，應該不須做很多說明，因為我們能夠創造目前的現狀，靠的在兩岸關係上，九二共識，不統、不獨、不武都是關鍵，這如果做不到，要想達到現在的現狀，真的是很困難。』
媒體也關心，如果明年政黨輪替，是否可能出現崩盤性的斷交？總統則表示，未來情況無法做準確的預測，不過從過去歷史來看，前總統陳水扁時期，最後丟了6個邦交國，在外交上也遭遇很大困難。
總統認為，要維持外交空間，兩岸關係就要平順，而兩岸關係要平順則要尊重九二共識、一中各表的理念，才能使大家一步步增加互信，也使得外交與兩岸相輔相成，形成良性循環。
